Garrow Publishes Book

on discrete choice modeling and air travel demand

Dr. Laurie Garrow, associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), has just published a book entitled Discrete Choice Modelling and Air Travel Demand: Theory and Applications by Ashgate Publishing Group. It is her first book, and it officially on sale now.

Discrete Choice Modelling and Air Travel Demand: Theory and Applications provides methods for modeling passenger demand and provides extensive examples to illustrate how these models have been used in the airline industry. Some of the examples include network planning, revenue management, and pricing applications. There is a strong interdisciplinary focus that bridges the gap between discrete choice modeling and operations research perspectives.

The publication contains eight chapters. The core chapters are written at a level appropriate for airline practitioners and graduate students with operations research or travel demand modeling backgrounds.

Dr. Andrew Boyd, former Chief Scientist at PROS USA states that "Garrow is one of those rare individuals with expertise in discrete choice analysis and knowledge of the airline industry, giving her a pilot's seat view into passenger demand modeling. The book should be required reading for anyone seriously interested in quantifying what drives passengers to do what they do--a topic that remains one of the great challenges facing airlines to this day".

Dr. Barry Smith, former Chief Scientist and Corporate Officer for Sabre Holdings, USA praises Dr. Garrow's book, stating "Laurie Garrow has written the book we've been needing and waiting for. Discrete Choice Modelling and Air Travel Demand: Theory and Application will be required reading for practitioners and modelers throughout the air transportation industry. Not only does Laurie provide the background for sound demand modeling, she establishes the foundation for modeling advances in scheduling, pricing, revenue management and distribution".

Prior to joining the CEE faculty, Dr. Garrow worked for four years at United Airlines in their revenue management research and development group. Herdissertation won first prize in the 2004 Aviation Applications Section of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). She is the 2009 recipient of the Council of University Transportation Centers-American Road and Transportation Builders Association New Faculty Member Award, for her research and teaching contributions. She is also the recipient of a NSF CAREER award.
