The Chapter of Sigma Xi at the Georgia Institute of Technology recently announced the 2009 Sigma Xi Research Award winners. Nicholas Schmidt, a former Civil and Environmental Engineering master's student, was honored with the Best M.S. Thesis Award. Nicolas was a student in the transportation systems engineering research group in CEE, and graduated in Summer 2008 with a MSCE. Professor Michael Meyer served as his advisor. The award will be presented at the Georgia Tech Annual Student Awards Banquet on April 23, 2009.
Established in 1886, Sigma Xi is the honor society of research scientists and engineers. It is an international, multidisciplinary organization whose programs and activities promote the health of the scientific enterprise, reward excellence in scientific research and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among scientists in all fields. The Sigma Xi Club was established at Georgia Tech in 1946 and became a chapter on June 8, 1953. Each year since 1947, the group has honored Georgia Tech faculty and students for leading research in science and engineering.
